The dissertation explores the relation between text (shastra) and practice (prayoga) in Kerala temple architecture tradition. The study is influenced by Sheldon Pollock's work 'The Theory of Practice and the Practice of Theory in Indian Intellectual Tradition' where he examine the intriguing relation between shastra and prayoga. Formulating the argument on these premises his work is a critique of the existing studies on Kerala's temple architecture and its preoccupation with formalistic and stylistic analysis. The main objective of this study is to critique the assertion of textuality in India's intellectual tradition especially in art making. Further, the study aims to address the production and reception of art making which also has been neglected while privileging style. I am using an ethnographic approach and this paper asserts that art is a social activity in which the artist, patron, society and the text play an important role.
